Getting Personal

My Story

It's time to get personal. It's what I ask of you each time you step into my office. I want to know all about you. Your history, your life, your fears and most importantly, what is happening inside your body. It's very personal. You trust me enough to share with me, it's only right that I should share my story with you.

I didn't grow up in a "hippy, crunchy, granola" home. We ate well, home made meals, lots of meat and potato type meals, and home grown veggies (which I didn't appreciated then- Thanks Mom!). We went to the doctor for everything, and trusted the doctor completely to know what was right for each of us. I didn't grow up questioning our health care system. That came later.

I married my high school sweetheart. <3 We started a family together. I mentioned in a previous post that I suffered from undiagnosed endometriosis. I tried many medications and nothing helped. The doctors told me I should just have a baby, it might help. Well, I always wanted to be a mother. I loved kids. It seemed like a good idea to me. So we had a baby.

What a wake up call that was. All of a sudden there was this tiny life I was responsible for and had to make serious decisions for. It was scary. I was resistant to the "normal medical practices," I began to question. Now you'll have to remember that the internet was as much of an infant as my infant son was. My circle of friends did not include any "hippy-crunchy-granola" type families, so it was slow going. I struggled.

It was shortly after our second son was born that my husband was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This shook my world. He was young, vibrant and healthy. How could this happen? I was desperate for answers but found none. Chance they told me. A virus maybe. Could it be prevented? No. I was not satisfied. There had to be something I could do. What if it happened to our boys too?

While we were still grieving his Diabetes diagnosis, it came to my attention that we had to overhaul everything we ate. Our standard north american diet of carbs and sweets and take out had to stop. As I did the bulk of the grocery shopping and cooking, this fell on me. I dug right in, here I could take action. I read books, bought cook books, went to the library, and joined Team Diabetes. Information was the balm to my aching heart. We learned through trial and error, through experience, what worked and what didn't. I began to see what an amazing difference food could make. And I fell in love.

I always enjoyed cooking; I got that from my Mom who always cooked with joy. As I changed the diet for my family, not only did my husband feel better, I felt so much better too. I noticed a change in my son's behaviour. As I learned more about how the body reacted to different components, their chemical make up, and how they are chemically broken down during digestion, I knew I wanted to learn more. I enrolled at The Edison Institute of Nutrition and worked my butt off to become a Holistic Nutritionist. That is where this all began.

Homeopathy came to me many years later. I had been struggling for a while, searching for more. More answers, more help. I knew food, nutrition and diet were the staples of healing, but what about when a person needed deeper healing? How could I help them then? Was there something I could do to help my family? I'm not one to give up, I hated to admit failure, I knew there was something missing that I needed.

When I found it I knew. I fell in love all over again. I attended a local practitioner's introductory workshop in Homeopathy. I had injured my hand a few days earlier and was afraid I wouldn't be able to take notes very well. I knew very little of homeopathy at that time, but the teacher decided to quickly take my case and gave me a few remedies for my hand. Not only was my hand fine, I walked out of that class feeling amazing. I felt like a fog had been lifted from my mind, I was full of energy and clarity. It was incredible. I took home a 18 remedy kit, my new found knowledge and text books and learned all that I could. I joined the local Homeopathy group and took as many workshops as I could. I used remedies with my family and close friends and witnessed the amazing results. But I was still taking classes for other modalities.

My wake up call came in the form of a white half ton truck that rear-ended me one night on the way to dance class. I had been rear-ended many years before resulting in a dislocated jaw, months of physio, mind numbing painkillers that stole months of my memories and lasting weakness in my neck and jaw. I was determined not to go down that path again. I called my teacher and we worked very closely together to pick the right homeopathic remedies and adjust them through my treatment. I used Essential oils to ease my muscle tension and pain. I meditated. I did gentle yoga stretches. I saw my trusted chiropractor, acupuncturist and massage therapist regularly to manage my symptoms. I didn't take one painkiller. Not one advil or tylenol. I refused to go down that path again. And I did it. I was dancing with my troupe just a couple months later in our annual show.

I decided to pursue my homeopathy studies full time after that. There was no denying how wonderfully it worked and on so many different levels. Homeopathy was already part of my life, now I needed it to be my profession. Fast forward many more years of blood, sweat and tears, and studying and here we are today. Building my practice, trying to show the world what I already see - Homeopathy is amazing, and it works!

Inside the Office

Trying something new can be scary or intimidating. I'd like to help ease the way and answer some frequently asked questions about what is involved in a Consultation with Lisa.

Why does it take so long?  You are unique. Your history, your experiences are a part of you. Your body, mind and spirit carry the imprint and consequences of your past and present. My job is to analyse, decode and decipher the resulting issues in order to help your body heal. I typically will spend several hours on each case, like putting together a puzzle without a picture. Each of your symptoms is a piece of the puzzle.

Your body's symptoms are the body's best attempt at healing. The body is designed perfectly, to self heal, replenish and renew. Sometimes the body needs help, it gets stuck, or over burdened by chemicals, pollutants, medications and negative emotions. Homeopathy can stimulate the body's own healing and help over come these burdens.

Why should I use Homeopathy instead of medication that is readily available?  Medications do not correct the issue. They manage the problem, relieve the pain or inflammation- but only temporarily. Medication does not get to the root cause of the issue- it only manages it and masks it. Medications are often suppressive - they work against the body to cover up what the body is trying to tell you. Medications always have side effects, these give an idea of what they are doing to your body.

Homeopathy provides lasting deep healing as it works with the body to stimulate the body's own healing response. Homeopathy provides what the body needs to get un-stuck, overcome obstacles to healing, and restore balance within the body. Homeopathic remedies that are chosen with the understanding of the body's processes and history will provide deep lasting healing. Homeopathic remedies do not have negative side effects aside from the "healing response" which is actually a positive sign that the remedy is reaching the parts of the body that need healing.

What can I expect through the course of my treatment? Most treatment plans consist of some detoxification, through diet, supplements and remedies as well as additional support where the body many need it.

I will put together recommendations for supplements that I feel would benefit you. These can be herbs, vitamins, gemmotherapy or other supplements depending on what you are comfortable with. We will discuss my recommendations and decide how much you want to do at that time and make a plan of action from there. I do not expect you to buy a lot of expensive products at each appointment. I try to keep my recommendations and treatment plan very easy to afford.

I will make recommendations of food to eat more of and foods to avoid. We will discuss detoxification, dietary restrictions and work within your comfort level and the goal you want to reach. I often offer other resources as needed to support learning and healing.

I work with you, every step of the way, to support your healing journey. I am a facilitator, educator and support person. I'm on your side.

Sometimes clients may experience what homeopaths refer to as a "healing response." This involves the return of old symptoms for a brief time while the body heals past supressions and during the process of detoxification. It can be upsetting at first until you understand that the body is working through your past history in order to heal and make you stronger and healthier. What had been done must be undone and healed.

This is why frequent communication is necessary throughout your treatment. As your body begins to heal, your symptoms will change. As your symptoms change your need for your remedies may decrease or you may need another remedy entirely to help you body.

Clients typically book appointments each month to follow up and optimize their treatment. Questions and concerns can be addressed by email during the course of the treatment.

Why does it cost so much? It doesn't. Homeopathy is one of the most affordable and economical forms of medicine available. The majority of the remedies cost $10.

The cost of the initial appointment may seem high at first, but not when you consider all that goes into them. I went to school for five years for my Nutrition and Homeopathy, not to mention the Child Psychology, Herbology, Gemmotherapy, Meditation and Muscle Testing. I am constantly taking new classes and courses to improve my practice and provide better care for my clients. Trust me, you are getting incredible value for your dollar.

Do you have other questions? I'd love to hear from you.
